Baptist Medical Center on Fleming Island, Florida
EES Design
At the intersection of movement and structure, Undulation by artist Mia Pearlman brings a sense of lightness and flow to its setting at Baptist Medical Center on Fleming Island. Composed of multiple uniquely shaped panels, the sculpture appears almost weightless—an effect that depends on carefully considered structural support hidden from view.
Our role centered on evaluating the sculpture’s anchorage and ensuring each element could be secured safely without compromising the artist’s intent. Using drawings prepared by the artist, we verified the installation’s ability to perform under site-specific gravity and wind loads. Rather than redesigning the foundation, the work focused on the critical connection between art and ground: confirming the number, size, and embedment depth of threaded-rod anchors fastening each panel’s base plate to a foundation designed by others. These details were calculated, documented, and sealed in accordance with Florida engineering standards, while accommodating the sculpture’s varied geometry.
The result is a quietly resilient structural solution—one that allows the artwork’s flowing forms to read as effortless and free, while providing the reliability required for a permanent public installation exposed to Florida’s elements.
